Description

This course provides the fundamentals of electrical engineering for students in disciplines other than electrical or computer engineering. Course begins with introduction to the circuit analysis techniques and review of the concepts of resistance, capacitance, and inductance voltage and current sources. Circuit analysis techniques are then applied to characterize the behaviour of commonly used electrical energy conversion devices such as transformers, dc machines, and induction and synchronous machines.

Objective

Students learn fundamental electric circuit laws, nodal and mesh analysis, DC and AC circuit analysis. Theory is applied to solve circuits’ problems, characterize their behavior, and analyze the transient and steady state response. After completing the course students also have an understanding of the essentials of electric power, its transmission, and transformers. Topics include: single phase and three-phase power circuit analysis; synchronous generators; synchronous, induction, and DC motors.

  • Basic ideal circuit elements resistors, capacitors, inductors, independent and dependent voltage and current sources.
  • Application of KCL and KVL to calculate the voltages, currents, energies, and powers of elements
  • Different methods to simplify circuits to "equivalent" circuits, principle of superposition, and maximum power transfer theorem.
  • Differentiation between transient and steady-state responses of circuits
  • Single phase ac circuit, complex number, phasor, sinusoidal source, instantaneous, average, reactive and complex power.
  • Transformer, voltage, current and impedance transformation.
  • Balanced three-phase circuits and power calculations
  • Overview of motors, dc machines, generators
  • AC machines, synchronous and induction motors.
