ECE to Launch Innovation Stream

First year engineering students at Queen’s will soon have the option of choosing the Innovation Stream, which is a new offering from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The stream will put an emphasis on those elements of entrepreneurship and innovation that allow technical knowledge to be successfully leveraged.

“Queen’s engineering is the perfect Faculty for this effort” says ECE Department Head Dr. Michael Greenspan. “Queen’s has a history of highlighting communication and project management skills in it’s engineering programs. In a way, this is just an extension of these that will allow our students to succeed even further.”

This summer, ECE Associate Head Dr. Shahram Yousefi attended the annual Deshpande Foundation Symposium in Lowell, MA, which is entirely devoted to promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within high education. Higher education initiatives were explored during twenty-four sessions at the three-day international event on the campus of University of Massachusetts Lowell from June 10th to June 12th, 2014.   

“With its huge commercial opportunities, ECE is a natural department to launch this stream. Also, one of the primary luminaries in this movement, Dr. Deshpande, is an alumnus of our department, and so it is fitting.”, says Yousefi. Dr. Deshpande has been appointed by President Obama as the Co-Chairmanship of the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, a group established to support the US President's innovation strategy.

The ECE Innovation Stream will be available to a select group of those students who start first year in September 2015. Indicators show that interest in the stream will be strong, and enrollment will be limited to just 50 students. The students will be placed in a distinct section and will have targeted offerings right off the mark in first term of first year.

“These students will still get the top quality technical education that Queen’s ECE is renowned for” says Greenspan. “The difference is, they’ll also get a grounding that will allow them to leverage that knowledge into innovation and success.”
