Biography

Dr. Ahmed Safwat

Professor Ahmed M. Safwat was born in Egypt. He received his B.Sc. with Honours from Kuwait University. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Queen's University in May 2000 and April 2003, respectively. He joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Queen’s University in June 2003. Professor Safwat is the Director of the Queen’s Laboratory for Advanced Wireless Networks (AWN).

Recently, he was the Co-Chair of the International Conference on Wireless Networks, Communications, and Mobile Computing (WirelessCom) 2005. He also served as the Publicity Co-Chair for the IEEE International Workshop on Information Assurance in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNIA) 2005. He was the Co-Chair of IEEE GLOBECOM 2004 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks. In addition, he was the Chairman of the IEEE IPCCC 2004 Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN). He was also the Chairman of the IEEE VTC 2003 Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks Symposium. He also served as the Co-Chair of the Technical Program for the Workshop on Energy-Efficient Wireless Communications and Networks (EWCN) in conjunction with IEEE IPCCC 2003. Professor Safwat is the Founder of EWCN. He has been a member of the technical program and organizing committees of numerous international conferences, symposia, and workshops. Research Interests

Over the past few years, Professor Safwat has been involved in a number of cutting-edge projects in the field of wireless networks and systems.He is mainly interested in disruptive technologies and revolutionary ideas, the success of which would have a direct impact on our daily lives. Professor Safwat’s research interests include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Future generations of wireless and mobile networks
  • Wireless ad hoc and sensor networks
  • Ad hoc-cellular networks
  • 4G/4G+ wireless mobile networks and systems
  • Vehicular wireless networks
  • Heterogeneous wireless networks
  • Wireless communications
  • Cross-layer design and optimization
  • Radio resource management
  • Wireless B/H/P/L/M/WANs
  • Ubiquitous and pervasive computing
