The educational mission of the Department is to produce graduates with well-rounded technical knowledge and skills, with the ability to learn and adapt, with team-oriented and leadership skills, with a strong work ethic, and with effective communication skills. The ECE Department has committed, dynamic faculty members who provide instruction in courses and supervise student projects to prepare our graduates for careers in Electrical Engineering and careers in Computer Engineering. The job market in ECE is quite strong at the present time and for the foreseeable future, so choosing to pursue studies in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering would be an excellent career decision.
The technical areas in the undergraduate programs of the Department include computer networks, digital and wireless communications, digital logic and computer systems, digital signal processing, electric machines and power electronics, microelectronic circuits and systems, microwave/optical components and systems, robotics and feedback control systems, and software. ECE courses provide the foundation for students to acquire expertise in these technical areas.
Finally, students at Queen's University can enjoy an extracurricular life with options to pursue cultural, international, social, political, athletic, artistic, recreational, and technical interests in a variety of organizations. National surveys of university students have shown the high level of student satisfaction, relative to other institutions, in the combination of the academic and non-academic opportunities that Queen's University offers to its students.
Walter Light Hall is the home of the ECE Department, housing administrative offices, research laboratories, and technical support. There are also classrooms of varying sizes, as well as seminar and conference rooms. For ECE undergraduate students, the Bain Centre on the main floor of Walter Light Hall offers tables, whiteboards, and computers for study, brainstorming, and work, as well as casual seating areas for relaxation.
The ECE Department is a primary user of the new and excellent Integrated Learning Centre (ILC) that is adjacent to Walter Light Hall. The ILC serves all undergraduate programs in the Faculty of Applied Science at Queen's University. It provides open plazas for undergraduate laboratory activities and an electronic Teaching Studio for innovative instructional techniques. For group study and project activities, the ILC provides a large number of meeting rooms that students can reserve, either through the Internet and or using consoles inside the building. The ILC facility is also open in the evenings in order to provide the maximum flexibility to students and their individual learning styles. All of the laboratory activities for ECE courses are hosted in the ILC, with specialized equipment being used for microprocessor systems and digital systems engineering, electronics, electric machines, robotics and control, and microwave/optical systems.
With the support of our excellent faculty, staff, and facilities, the ECE Department offers students a superb opportunity to learn and to excel.
