What To Do Before you Arrive

Set up a Queen's (E-mail) Account

Every student at Queen's University has an e-mail/internet account. In fact students are required to obtain and use the University's e-mail system to communicate with the University and to receive information from the University. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering corresponds with all their students through Queen's e-mail.

To set up a Queen's account (student email account), please refer to web site: http://www.its.queensu.ca/itsc/useIT/qcard_getid/getid.html . Please note that you will need your student number to do this. The student number is a seven-digit number that will be listed on the letter of admission that you received from the School of Graduate Studies. If you are not sure of the student number please contact the Graduate Program Assistant (ecegrad[at]post.queensu.ca).

Once you have set up and activated your Queen's account please send the Queen's E-mail address to the Graduate Program Assistant (ecegrad[at]queensu.ca)

Tuition Costs

Graduate students have several options for paying tuition. Fees can be paid in a lump sum at any Canadian bank at the beginning of each term or arrangements can be made for the Pre-authorization Payment Plan from a chequing account at any Canadian bank. Domestic students must make a minimum payment or complete the form for direct debit withdrawal by August 1, 2010. International students have until the day of registration to either pay for tuition or set up the Pre-authorization Payment Plan. If you choose the Pre-authorization Payment Plan, payments are made the last working day of each month. The first payment in the fall term will be made the end of October. This allows time for funding to be in place before withdrawals begin. See University Registrar page (Domestic Fees or International Fees) for details on tuition fees, and Fee Payment Method page.

Register for English Communication Assessment (ECA)

If you had to pass a written English language proficiency test (TOEFL, or IELTS or MELAB) for admission to Queen's University then you are also required to take the English Communication Assessment (ECA) in order to work as a Teaching Assistant at Queen's University. This assessment is administered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at Queen's University at the beginning of the Fall and Winter Terms. You will receive an email from the Department at least a month before you arrive for your studies, outlining the requirements and how to sign up for the ECA. Once you have registered for the ECA and received confirmation of the date and time, please notify the Graduate Program Assistant (ecegrad[at]queensu.ca) with this information.

The assessment usually takes place in the first week of term, before classes begin.

If you do not obtain satisfactory results on the ECA, you must register for and complete SGS 802 – Communication Skills for Teaching Purposes before you can be a Teaching Assistant. This term length course is offered in both the Fall and Winter Terms. At the completion of the course you will be reassessed and it will be determined whether you qualify to be a Teaching Assistant or it may be recommended that more training will be needed simultaneously with a Teaching Assistant position.

Please note that your performance on the ECA and in SGS 802 will not affect your admission or registration as a graduate student at Queen's. It will only determine your ability to work as a Teaching Assistant which could in turn affect your funding.

For Frequently Asked Questions about ECA please check out - http://www.queensu.ca/ctl/community/students/s_english_assessment.html

Throughout the year the Centre for Teaching and Learning offers workshops and training for Teaching Assistantships and the Department encourages its graduate students to participate. There is no cost to attend the events/workshops/courses offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
